Hanging is such a sad and lonely looking death, and I never realized how common it must be (all these photos!) Does hanging, as a method of suicide, surpass shooting, in numbers of dead worldwide?

I'v just done a quick google on this, and not come up with a clear answer. Of course there are all sorts of problems with the statistics, but so far as can see worldwide hanging, shooting, and poisoning by pesticides more or less level-peg at around 30% each. Of course there are huge differences between countries, depending in part on whether guns or strong pesticides are easily available though I'm sure there are many other factors involved.

Thank you, deaddirty, for answering my question! I certainly understand the problems you've pointed out concerning available data (lies, damn lies and statistics). Nonetheless, I am enlightened by your observation that guns, poison and hanging each seem to be more or less equally responsible for suicides around the globe.

That's very true, steveo1955, and may indeed play a part in the 30% attributed to hanging. Trees are free and nearly ubiquitous, and whatever one ties around one's neck (including rope) is likely to be easily obtained and cheap. Poison and firearms do not share the same attributes.

Rope - yes. Trees - yes, except in the denser urban areas but there are beams, window catches and plenty of other ingenious solutions as our swingers in this thread demonstrate.
But there is one further need -privacy. I guess hanging yourself is one of those activities like going to the toilet, having a wank, fucking, where one really does not want to be interrupted halfway through. Maybe that's why in Hong Kong jumping off buildings is the preferred method (an odd detail I picked up in the Google search)?

I just always feel so bad for anyone who commits suicide. It's the knowledge of how horribly depressed they must have been, and how much they'd suffered beforehand. Then, to have to do something so frightening to oneself in the end! :[

The blonde looks particularly sexy in those clothes! I strongly suspect foul play here. It seems unlikely that two good-looking young men would commit suicide together. Though, if they were gay, there might be a tragic love story behind this.

I'm afraid if I came upon that scene, I would have nightmares for ages. And just think, in no time at all, totally unwitting people could be sitting at those tables, eating and drinking. To me, the very airspace in this little grotto has been forever tainted. Certainly, the furniture, at least, should be replaced. :[
