Ive seen it in reference to one of the wild west shows that were popular in the 1890's, either something like Buffalo Bill's or any number of imitators. The difficulty in obtaining a photographer and equipment at the time suggests that the photograph was not a spontaneous appearance at the onset of a vigilante action, but rather something arranged for publicity. I've spent the last few days and nights going through this thread from the beginning, and I'm just dazzled by it. For now, this is the only picture I can find in my collection that wouldn't be a repost. I'm not absolutely sure it's genuine, but more than one source has declared it to be the real hanging of a horse thief in Oregon in 1900, so I'll take the chance. If someone has certain knowledge that it's a fake, please let me know.
