The looks of sheer fun and joy on spectators is like they are at the movies or some leisure time entertainment.
I wonder what they told each other about why they were hanging the guys naked or why they took off the guys clothes after they were dead. These days they would say it shames the ones who take the clothes off not the naked guy.
But i am sure glad they took their clothes off. IF you are going to trouble to slaughter a guy, might as well get the most out of his body, entertainment, food, etc. sexual release, fertilizer, pillow covers, coin purses, wall mountings.

He wasn't protecting anything. He was reduceing the pain that a bare ropes gives. Having a thick soft cloth makes it easier.
