How much would it hurt to hang like this? It looks like a no drop hanging, they just let his body weight strangle him. How much would this hurt and how long would you be consious and aware what is going on?

Many reports suggest that it can take anything up to 20 MINUTES to actually die by any form of hanging. Official reports of Kuwait hangings, which use a fairly long or standard drop, say victims were declared dead after anything from 6 to 23 minutes, in fact. So there is no reason to suppose a 'no drop' hanging would take any less time.

It's generally thought, though, that the person loses consciousness quickly – from a matter of a few seconds up to 3 or 4 minutes, before lack of oxygen plus the blood supply being cut off to the brain causes the victim to black out. However, those few minutes will feel like hours, as the victim is aware that he is hanging to his death.

Reports from survivors of slow hangings suggest that it is extremely painful and distressing for a period of time – 1-3 minutes, perhaps – with the rope tight around the neck, increased blood pressure, intense headache, collapsed lungs, popping eyes, pins and needles spreading throughout the entire body, and so forth – after which the victim feels no pain but is still conscious, and feels like he is floating. After that, he will go to sleep, before cardiac arrest and brain death finally occur.

It depends on the position of the rope: whether it cuts off the blood supply, the air supply, or both. Even with a broken neck (from a long or standard drop), the victim dies either by asphyxiation, or from the blood supply being cut off or essential nerves being compressed, not from the neck being broken. Breaking the neck is designed to cause instant unconsciousness, but it's a myth that it kills the victim instantly. This is why with long-drop hangings the victim is left for one hour.... which also gives time for his bowels and bodily fluids to empty fully.

In cases where people are hanged in groups, it's not uncommon for some of the victims to appear to have a swift and peaceful death – to go to sleep with no struggle – while others struggle, turn blue and appear to suffer a great deal of pain... suggesting some are dying by slow asphyxiation, while others die more swiftly by having their blood supply cut off. I've seen pictures of an Iran hanging where one victim was blue and seemed to be in agony, and the other looked normal and peaceful.

As DD will confirm, during hanging the victim can also urinate, defecate and, in about one third of cases, have a full or partial penile erection during execution. In a handful of cases, that erection leads to orgasm. This has been confirmed by several medical reports. Some victims have a post-mortem erection, as blood pools in the body's extremities.

Dan28129,
I was meaning to reply to iour question last night, but forgot by the time I'd finished posting new stuff. Ropetrick has answered pretty thoroughly, to which I'd add a couple of things:
- by cutting off the blood supply, he means the noose is tight enough to close the carotid artery (taking fresh blood into the head and brain) - that causes very rapid loss of consciousness. If it is less tight, as well as closing the windpipe it may close the jugular vein, which takes de-oygenated blood out -if that happens, blood pools in the head, causing the swollen blue tongue, lips etc, and also the nosebleeds which you sometimes see on a hanged man.
- the noose can also press on various nerves. One of these can cause the heart to stop, in which case apparent death really is almost instant (though brain death will presumably still take several minutes). But another causes automatic urination, defecation, and erection
- the convulsions caused by oxygen starvation in the brain can also empty the bowels, bladder, and balls (and I think cause erection, though I'm not sure about that). At that stage to person is probably unconscious, though the body is moving and performing of its own accord
- at an earlier stage, partial asphyxia while still conscious can also cause intense erotic stimulation#
So death by hanging is a complex way to go - a lot of things can happen!

I would say seconds, as well. Never seen any documentation or had experience with consciousness lasting minutes, but in the '80's there was some clueless literature floating around from a John Randall (aka "Katharsis") that claimed "a healthy young man could dangle for days" on the gallows, no doubt giving inexperienced players false (and potentially fatal) expectations.

Rule of thumb would be that you could count the number of seconds of consciousness from a suspension hanging with the fingers on your hands.
Loss of consciousness doesnt mean you stop struggling, though, and many people have asphyxiated and died in police choke holds because the officer could not tell when the victim lost consciousness and continued to "resist" until their hearts stopped.

Maybe... it depends on the rope position. There are videos of Iranian hangings which suggest that the victim stays conscious for longer, though, in some cases. For example, there is a video of five young guys hanging (it's on CDG). Four of them seem to hang motionless without struggling, but one of them is obviously alive and conscious and struggles for a long time – and is aware enough to free his hands and try to free the rope from around his neck. There is another video of a solder being hanged, who is obviously conscious for a long time, and another Iranian hanging where two men hang almost motionless, but a woman hanging between them struggles and tries to free herself for a long time. There is also first hand testimony from people who have been cut down and reprieved, or partially lynched, who have described being conscious for a long period and aware of what was happening. So it depends: can be seconds, can be a low number of minutes. But actual death can take much, much longer.... sometimes as much as 20 minutes or more, or as short as 5 or 6 minutes.

About to hang

...anyway, back to more important things: Here's a guy who's about to find out if it takes seconds or minutes to lose consciousness, and whether or not he will die cumming with an erection.

Don't know anything about this picture, other than the fact that I like it.

Is this a suicide or murder photo? Hard to believe a child so young would do this....

Are you referring to the black and white picture I've posted, or to DD's pictures? There seems to be a problem with Asian pictures and people thinking they are younger than they are... recently someone criticised DD for sharing a picture of an apparently very young person, but he didn't: that victim was actually in his 30s. Because many Asian men have small facial features and little or no body hair, people sometimes mistake images of them for being much younger.

The black and white picture I've shared above is clearly a man in his 20s or older: I'd never share pictures on this forum of anyone under age. I have no desire to see or share such pictures. I have zero tolerance of underage images. In the case of DD's pictures above, I'd say the person was late teens (19) or early 20s.

Mine is an execution photo. I only share images that are in the public domain, and which document actual events, principally executions.

Jeb, I agree with the 'message' of your post: people should not take risks with self-hanging and rope play under any circumstances, and make the fatal mistake (as many have done) of assuming that they will stay conscious for more than a second or two. Don't do it: why take the risk?

Im familiar with that video. The guy that frees his hand is flailing it in a manner that is consistent with an unconscious person; I have personally observed this in play sessions.
What many people fail to grasp is that struggling takes place long after consciousness is lost, and it's a mistake to assume a person is still aware just because they are still moving.

I'm sure you're right, Jeb... although he does a/ free his hands and b/ try to move his hands towards his neck to undo the rope. :-)
Anyway, I bow to your superior knowledge of these things. I don't indulge in play, and don't plan to. But stay safe. :-)

Three vintage hangings....

Apologies if reposts... these all look painful.
Pyjamas: always the best way to go when you're on the noose. :-)

Apologies if these are reposts... they probably are.
But, you know, enjoy.

Note large bulge of the guy on the right, last pic.

All the bandages in the first pic are strange. What happened to that guy? He seems to be bleeding from his wrists and feet.

12 guys hang at Evin Prison

Picture 1: Moments from hanging, 12 men (two out of shot) during their execution on the gallows at Iran's notorious Evin Prison.

To carry on a recent discussion, statistically, maybe 3 of these men will have had erections during their execution, and 1 or 2 of those men would have died having an orgasm. I wonder which ones?

:damn wtf:

Picture 2: A shot of six of the men hanging, moments after being pushed off the gallows table by a guard. (There is a brief video of them hanging from the gallows, from which this is a still.... can someone find it? I can't)

Apologies if these are reposts.
