For suicide it depends on what you have available, though and dignity probably isn't the chief concern. When I tried to kill myself (about 10 years ago; I was an undiagnosed, unmedicated, neurotic depressed mess) I didn't have any handy high suspension points in my home, or a long enough ligature, so I just went with a belt and a doorknob. Looks like this guy was in a similar boat.
As a young man, I actually looked for good hanging spots when checking out apartments and later when buying a home. I wanted to know I had a good self hanging play spot and also for if I decided to hang myself for real. A couple of times I've tempted fate and rolled the dice, planning to hang myself it things went wrong. I cheated on my taxes big-time in the late 80's. I think I almost hoped I'd get caught and have the excuse. It's really kind of a freedom I've enjoyed. I can always use the noose if I fuck up.
