Gale

Gale-force winds are blowing here from the Mediterranean as a deep cyclone forms over Europe.

Arctic air is moving over the UK bringing snow and temperatures as low as -17'C while in Eastern Europe warmer air from the Mediterranean is pushing north, brining thunderstorms and temperatures as high as 25'C.

Thunderstorms in November and December are a rare occurance here.

clear, sunny and 47

Cold. 25cm (10 inches) of snow. And it's only November!

Is it still snowing in the UK?

The snow situation in Great Britain has even been featured in news bulletins here, TV showed streets under a thick blanket of snow.

Would you say this is a rare event or just unusual?

This is in Auchterarder, Scotland today.

Very rare so early in the winter. Last winter was long and hard (erm, yes, it is the weather I'm talking about!), already this winter we've had as much snow here (though not nearly as long, yet). But many winters before last year we have not had this much snow or so long all winter - those were very mild winters, but most winters in 1990s and early 2000s were like that

Thank you for your interesting reply.

Really sorry to hear you are not enjoying the snow, we could use some here, I am tired of all the rain.

The North Atlantic Oscillation is to blame for the deep freeze in the UK.

This year it is in a strong negative phase, just like last winter meaning the jet stream is shifted south bringing storms in the Mediterrenian while allowing for arctic air masses to settle and remain over the UK.

The forecast for the UK this winter is not good - deep freeze in January and February and quite possibly into March.

On the other hand here we will have a very mild, wet winter with rain and flooding.

The North Atlantic Oscillation determiines where the jet stream is and that in turn rules the weather in Europe, esp in winter.

Tonight it is 9 degrees Fahrenheit with a winter storm warning here. That's approx. -13 degrees C.

Torrential rain day and night leads to this:

This is from Bulgaria today, entire villages are swamped after torrential rain day and night.

Arctic Blast

Arctic air has reached the Balkans, strong northern wind can freeze your balls in minutes.

Actually it is so cold outside you can keep a dead guy on the balcanoy and he wouldn't decompose.

:Merry Xmas:

Any pics?

I do miss the cold. Negative double digit wind chills, piles of snow. My last true winter was spent in Minneapolis; actually Savage. The kick-off to that winter was the Halloween snowstorm where the official totals at the airport in 24 hours were 36+ inches. We got over 4 feet at the house and loved every minute of it. Nothing beats a white Christmas. Decorated palm trees and sand just do not convey the Christmas spirit like a cold blanket of white. Yes, the Christmas spirit is all in one's mind, but the right atmosphere does play a part and helps. Maybe I can get a Christmas miracle and get a blizzard in the desert? I have been good...well, most of the time. :Merry Xmas: :Christmas Tree:

Thanks a lot for these pics, beautiful cosy street, not a lot of people though.

Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, I would love to visit.

Im glad to hear it ! :)
I think you would like it. I've never been to Bulgaria but my mom last year. She liked the mosquees. We don't have them here. You should visit Praha (Prague) or Krakkow too. They are very unique cities :).

Horrible weather on Christmas Eve

As the clock struck midnight and we exchanged gifts a powerful storm hit with lightning and lashing rain...

It got so bad electricity was cut and we had to lit candles!

I don't remember a year where we have had lightning storms on Christmas - not in my lifetime and my parents also couldn't remember such an event.

On Christmas we usually have snow. This year we have been setting temperature records every other day esp November and December.
