Other war movies, in English? 'The Battle of the River Plate' and 'Sink the Bismarck!' are both very old, but they both give fairly accurate and exciting accounts of the British naval engagements against the Graf Spee and the Bismarck. 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' (about Pearl Harbour) is... well, it's AMERICAN, isn't it? That just about sums it up.
Two good films about the land war - both about forty years old - are 'A Bridge too Far' (about the parachute landings at Arnhem in 1944), and 'The Battle of the Bulge' (about the German winter offensive in the Ardennes). The all-time movie classic set in World War Two isn't in fact about the fighting at all, it's about POWs: 'The Great Escape' starring Steve McQueen.
If you're interested in the Vietnam War I'd recommend 'The Deer-Hunter' (which studies the psychological effect which combat has on fighting men), and 'Apocalypse Now' (part-based on the Conrad novella 'Heart of Darkness'). I would NOT recommend 'The Green Berets', which is so rabidly ant-communist it's just plain silly.
The only war film I've seen set in the Balkans is 'The Guns of Navarone', but it's a weak film, too too BRITISH for words, old chap!
More up to date: 'Braveheart' (Mel Gibson's fiercely anti-English film about Scots resistance to Edward I). Despite the bias it's a very gripping and involving film. And lastly, 'Troy'. You'd think Brad Pitt would be too much of a pretty-boy to make a convincing Achilles, but actually he's surprisingly good and the film is very exciting.
