A further contribution to this great thread - the series of paintings by Guido Reni of St Sebastian - the roman soldier tied to a tree and shot full of arrows. Now a gay icon.

I added these 2 my collection a few years ago. One is already posted above - but I ran out of time to remove it from this series. Were these painting deliberately homoerotic? - have a look and decide for yourself.

I am sure that they were purposely homoerotic. I have manipulated many old masters of St Sebastian and they always give me an instant hard on just looking at them. I cannot imagine many men (and clergy) not getting quetly turned on at the sight of a near or totally naked young man tied to a tree with arrows in him!! Some old masters even have an arrow on or close to the crotch! Very homoerotic in my book.

I agree, robbie. Also - the upward pointing arrow ♂ of course is the 'male symbol - so arrows do have sexual symbolism.
