WELSH-born Australian actor and Spartacus: Blood And Sand star Andy Whitfield has returned to Sydney as he attempts to battle a second round of cancer.
After recently announcing the recurrence of the non-Hodgkins lymphoma he was diagnosed with in February and subsequently quitting the TV action series that propelled him to stardom in the US, the one-time engineer and father-of-two has been seen around town looking frail.
"He did not look well," a spy told Confidential.
Whitfield, 36, also appeared "sick" while walking into the Oscar Oscar Salon in Paddington this week, however, the hairdressers refused to comment when contacted yesterday.
He is believed to be undergoing a second stage of chemotherapy following three months of treatment earlier this year in New Zealand where Spartacus is filmed. He went into remission afterwards but in September confirmed the cancer was back.
In a statement two months ago he said: "It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey." The actor, who married wife Vashti in 1999, could not be contacted yesterday and his Australian management firm, RGM, did not return our calls.
Spartacus producers are currently searching for an actor to replace Whitfield and, according to Deadline Hollywood, it is down to three finalists - Stephen Amell, Aiden Turner and Australian Liam McIntyre, who appeared in Pacific.

Liam McIntyre, an Australian actor who starred in HBO's The Pacific, has been tapped to replace Andy Whitfield in Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Starz announced Monday.

McIntyre, 28, steps into the role after Whitfield was forced to drop out after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Production on the Starz series was initially halted in March. After his cancer resurfaced, Whitfield was forced to drop out to resume aggressive treatment.

"Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead Spartacus forward,"

-Starz President Chris Albrecht

"It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he's dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going."

Production on the second season of Spartacus is slated to resume by spring. Starz will air the prequel series, titled Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, starting Friday at 10/9c.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand creator Steven. S. DeKnight wants Andy Whitfield's fans to know the actor is actively fighting the disease.

"Andy of course is being very private about his condition and what he's going through with his family," DeKnight said Tuesday to discuss the prequel Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. "It's been a little while, but the last thing I heard was that he was attacking it like a true champion. I have the utmost faith that he will pull through with flying colors."

The 36-year-old Whitfield has been battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, forcing him to drop out of the Starz series in September.

Liam McIntyre was recently announced as Whitfield's replacement as the titular gladiator.

"We're all just praying for him," Manu Bennett, who plays fellow gladiator Crixus, said. "When the cancer has moved on as it has, it's a bigger battle for him. I can't tell you how deeply saddened(sic) it has been for all of us to know that our friend, our colleague, our inspiration has been given such a challenge. It's going to be a longer period of time before any of us know what is going to be the result with Andy right now. All communications would indicate that he's in very high spirits and that he's fighting this thing with as much strength as he fought [with] on the show."

In the meantime, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena will premiere the first of six episodes Friday at 10/9c.

The series focuses on Batiatus (John Hannah) before his ludus becomes a contender in the gladiator tournaments and Crixus before he becomes a fighting champion. In the spring, production will begin on the second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

"The only juice I'll give you is that it's extra sweet," DeKnight said. "Season 2 is shaping up to be a hell of a ride. We're actually about halfway through figuring [it] out. We're obviously deeply saddened that Andy couldn't continue with us. He was a huge part of the show's success. We wish him the best and a speedy recovery."

As for Whitfield's replacement, DeKnight said they did "an exhaustive search to find somebody not to replace Andy but to step into the role of Spartacus. We feel very fortunate that we were able to find Liam, who we felt really embodied everything we were looking for in the character looking forward."

British-born actor Andy Whitfield, star of the TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, it was confirmed today.
The star, who was born in Amlwch, Wales, but moved to Sydney in 1999, lost his 18-month battle with the disease on a 'sunny Sydney morning in the arms of his loving wife (Vashti),' she said in a statement.

Tragically young: Spartacus actor Andy Whitfield has died from cancer at the age of 39. He passed away in Sydney in the arms of his wife, it was announced 13 September 2011.
The actor, who was 39, was diagnosed with stage 1 of the disease in March 2010, but was declared cancer-free two months later after beginning treatment immediately in New Zealand.
The actor's Spartacus co-star, Lucy Lawless, also paid tribute to him on her website, saying he was a 'gentle man who never had a bad world about anyone'.
However, the cancer returned in September of that year and he was advised to resume 'aggressive treatment'.

yes they did have one in the first series, he was a very hot little boy. got fucked a lot.

Great pics Beuen, thanks for posting. Love those horny gladiators. Especially love the pic EthanJay22 uses for his avatar. It's originally by an artist called Oliver Frey (also known as Zack) and shows a hairy gladiator about to plunge either his cock or his blade into a cute young defeated opponent's ass. Soo HOT & HORNY!

I can imagine. Supposedly, the Romans encouraged gay activity among their troops. they were conquering the world, few women around and a guy would fight to the death to protect his lover before he fought for the emperor. just what i've heard

Truth time:- Who has not wank off to a scene from Spartacus and who has?
