The guy below the helicopter may have been a prisoner who was released after interrogation. Some VC bodies might be in worse shape than most we see in these photos. Sometimes, it was customary, if time allowed, for survivors to booby trap a comrade's body with explosives, as a nasty surprise for the retrieval crew. American soldiers learned to first use a long rope or pole to move the body, before picking it up.
The photo of the row of shirtless bodies on the road side may have been of a mass murder, instead of military dead.
