The Russian army excoronel Yuri Budanov, who served eight years in prison for the kidnapping and murder of a young Chechen was shot dead on 2011 in downtown Moscow.
Budanov confessed that he had strangled the girl in a fit of rage during an interrogation in the belief that it was the Chechen sniper had killed two officers in his unit.
The prosecution tried to bring civil charges of rape and humiliation of the corpse, but were dismissed by the military prosecutor's office for "lack of evidence."
