27, of Willits, Calif.; assigned to a West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit; died Aug. 6 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter in which he was riding was shot down.​

Jesse D. Pittman was a firefighter in California who dreamed of becoming a Navy SEAL - and fulfilled his dream. According to the Santa Rosa The Press-Democrat newspaper, friends describe him as smart, hardworking and determined. He joined the Navy after graduating from Willits High School in California in 2002.​
