Any idea why the Jap was committing ritual suicide ? Was his comrade aiming the rifle at him to finish him off if he failed / chickened out ?

I always thought that the "ritual" of Hari Kari was to designate a "friend of honor" to behead you the moment you've plunged the sword into your stomach to relieve you of the agony after you've saved "face". I assumed that the guy with the rifle was standing behind him to blow out his brains as soon as he mortally wounded himself, but the photo after he commits suicide shows no bullet wound to the head. But the other photograph of the guy who also committed hari kari shows his severed head - so he must have done it with a friend behind him to cut off his head as a gesture of friendship. There would be nothing honorable about having a guy with a rifle standing behind to execute you if you "chickened" out

Aye thank you for letting me know I have read more about Seppuku and realise the "second" beheads his friend when he has stabbed himself enough in the guts. Maybe the man with the rifle was forcing a dishonoured man to commit hara kiri. Highlanders may not commit suicide but we can seek certain death in battle if honour says we should.

When rejected by his followers, he took his own life.

He was NOT rejected by his followers. He made a speech in front of members of Japan's self-defense military, who really didn't agree with what he had to say. I am not sure if he would have liked this site, either.

I also read he had one of his followers/lover to fuck him the night before. There has been a picture of his decapitated head somewhere as well.

Great question Blackheart! Like most men into beheading and the perfect way to have your head chopped off this should be under a topic like "Wonderful decapitations". I would love hari kari, especially if my "friend of honor" lopped off my head instantly to spare me agony and allow my head to fly off my shoulders in honor.

Would oblige with a broadsword, the Highlander who cannot find death in battle when honour dictates, should either fall on his broadsword or dirk, or have a comrade behead him.

Japs believes stomach is the place where the soul is. So it was way to manifest soul purity "Look I opened my soul to prove it's pure".

The guy standing behind him with katana is called "kaishaku". After belly opening agony could take even few hours. Kaishaku was guaranteed the guests which came to ceremony do not have to wait few hours until show is over or guy will start to yell from pain. However there is plenty examples in history it was done without kaishaku.
