Likely the leathers were disposed of in accordance with all bio-hazard items (incinerated)

Typically they return personal effects to families. If body is very badly damaged, they may not even do autopsy, and may just put the whole remain in a casket.

It wasn't leather, but I have previously collected a bloody underwear and shorts of a squid died in a motorcycle chase. The EMS removed these, and they and the police did not really clean the scene. So the lady of the house where it happened put them in a trash bin, and she voluntarily let me recover these items. She thought I was his friend.
