In the Netherlands. a man aged 58 was reported missing.
He went ice-skating on the Nieuwkoopse Plassen (Lakes near Nieuwkoop, South-Holland) and didn't return.
A large-scale search in a 2000-hectare area with hovercrafts and drones failed to find him. His body was found under the ice the next day.
Dutch people love to skate on lakes and canals:
But the ice was far too thin to be safe yet, and everyone is warned not to go out on open water.
Going alone is reckless and foolhardy even if the ice is safe
(it is as hard as concrete and you can fall really bad, especially on your head, and you freeze to death quite soon then).
If the ice breaks, you'll slide under it at high speed, and very probably can't find the exit anymore.
You drown while you see the safe world only an inch away just over your face .
Salvaging the stiff body is all that can be done.
Going out on thin ice on open water ALONE is a very effective way to commit suicide !
