The Murder of a Prostitute in 1933 Solved 90 Years Later

On September 1, 1933, employees of the railway station in Bratislava were in for a real shock. In one of the forgotten suitcases, which arrived by train from Prague's Masaryk station, there were no clothes or daily necessities, but a woman's head with a deep gash and severed legs. They received a similar unpleasant surprise in Košice. There, too, a suitcase was found on the train – this time from Wilson station – with gruesome contents, namely a woman's torso with seven stab wounds in the left breast area and severed arms.
The victim was identified on September 6, a prostitute Otília Vranská who was recognized by her two sisters. Criminalists under the leadership of Josef Vaňásk put together a snapshot of the last hours of Otília Vranská's life, in the center of which stood Captain Josef Pěkný, a respected legionnaire, a veteran of the Battle of Zborov and an accountant in the barracks. He knew Vranska well, and the police managed to find out that he had a paid sexual relationship with her, which they maintained for a long time. Vranská allegedly told her landlady that Pěkný would soon marry her. At the same time, Pěkný maintained a relationship with a certain Antonia Koklesová, which apparently led to a tragic event.
Vranská met with the captain and Koklesová in the U Kupců restaurant. According to witnesses, they had a good time, Vranská drank 4 beers, sang and there was no indication that there was any conflict between her, Pěkný and Koklesová. Shortly after midnight, the trio left in the direction of Karlov náměstí, where Pěkný and Koklesová boarded a tram and went to the apartment at Táborská. Vranská had previously let it be known that she had to look for a place to stay because she did not dare to wake up the landlady. She was last seen alive at the entrance of the U Šmelhausů restaurant at one o'clock in the morning, where she decided to go see Pěkný.
At the time the case of the dismembered woman attracted a lot of media attention, and the press made the most of the horrific event. Unfortunately, this hampered the investigation considerably. Newspapers were inundated with anonymous letters, either confessing to murder or with a "guaranteed" tip on a possible killer. At the same time, media pressure prevented the investigators from fully focusing on the war hero Pěkný, who at the same time had a motive and an opportunity, and at the same time behaved very strangely.
It is believed that a scene of jealousy broke out in Pěkný's apartment, and the complications that a woman of "light manners" could cause to a respected war hero provoked the man to a drastic act. Apparently Pěkný approached Vranská from behind, tilted her head and cut her throat in such a way that he almost separated her head from her body. But Vranská was not dead on the spot, which is why he probably struck her with another blow to the head. The stab wounds in her chest, according to the autopsy, were inflicted only after her killers severed her head, so their purpose remains a mystery.
Nice had an apartment with a bathtub, which was unusual at the time, but convenient for dismembering a dead body. At the same time, Pěkný terminated the lease the day after the murder without having a new apartment available. It was a strangely irresponsible and rather atypical step for a man of his status and habits. Nevertheless, the investigators had no evidence that it was Pěkný who committed the murder.
A police team was working to solve the murder after 90 long years, waiting for DNA analysis. Vranská was holding a lock of hair in her hand. The result was summarized in the final report of September 21, 2023, according to which the murderer was indeed Rotmeister Josef Pěkný, probably in collaboration with Antonia Koklesová. According to the director of the Police Museum of the Czech Republic, Radek Galaš.
