A 31-year-old Deltona man was arrested, accused of commandeering a car and forcing its driver out so he could rush his pregnant girlfriend to the hospital.
Robert Boudreaux was arrested in the hospital parking lot Sunday after a saga that began when his girlfriend's car ran out of gas and the couple had walked several miles.
He is accused of armed carjacking, fleeing a law-enforcement officer and driving with a suspended license.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, this is what happened:
The girlfriend's car ran out of gas, and the couple walked several miles. The 22-year-old girlfriend then began to feel dehydrated and complained that she was bleeding.
Boudreaux picked her up and walked into the path of an oncoming Buick. The 20-year-old driver stopped and initially refused to take them to the hospital, but Boudreaux got angry and threatened to shoot him, so he let them both climb inside.
When the driver stopped at a red light, Boudreaux demanded that he run it and, when he did not, Boudreaux pinned the driver against his seat then threatened to shoot him if he didn't get out of the car.
The driver stepped out, and Boudreaux then began driving his girlfriend to the hospital.
He drove erratically, shifting lanes, passing cars in the turn lane and refusing to pull over for deputies, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Office.
When he got into the hospital parking lot, the evasion continued, the Sheriff's Office reported, with Boudreaux driving in circles, but deputies finally cornered the car and arrested him.
They found him with two working cell phones, the Sheriff's Office reported, which he presumably could have used to call for help. In addition, when the couple was on foot, they had walked past a fire station without stopping to ask for medical help, the Sheriff's Office reported.
The woman was checked out at the hospital, and the Sheriff's Office reports that no one was hurt. There was no word on the status of the baby, said Brandon Haught, an agency spokesman.
The woman, described by deputies as homeless, did not return a phone call.
Deputies did not recover any weapons, and it was not clear why they asked prosecutors to file an "armed" carjacking charge against Boudreaux. The victim told them he never saw a gun, Haught said.
A check of Florida Department of Law Enforcement records shows that Boudreaux has been arrested more than two dozen times and has been sentenced for offenses that include cocaine possession, burglary, domestic violence, aggravated assault, being a hit-and-run driver and prowling. Sunday's was his third arrest this year, records show.
