I agree Marky, in the era of public executions, burning at the stake was a big draw. Hanging and beheading were too quick, crucifixion was too slow. Hung drawn and quartered was up there, along with breaking on the wheel. The North American Indians took burning at the stake to a new level of torture.
Another big thing for me is the deeply embedded Catholic threat of being "cast naked into the fires of Hell", something that was used on me constantly. The thing is that when I got a bare butt strapping in front of a print of "Heaven and Hell", I thought Hell was much more interesting with all the naked bodies writhing versus the image of Heaven with old men sitting on a cloud around Jesus in robes.
