In the past ,beheading is the preferred way of execution in many countries,China included. It was supposed to be painless, done properly with one swift stroke.Hehe

A good collection with most of these pictures and more you can find at http://beheadedart.com/. Sorry, but the timeline mostly is wrong. There is one picture for 1926 where even on the picture itself you see the copyright by the photographer from 1906. Or one said to be from 1922 with a stamp from the Imperial Chinese Post - but China was a republic since 1912.

Sorry. I trusted the page where I found

The really interesting thing is that back then they always seemed to have a camera to photograph the event, before and after the head was cut off. Never could understand when a blindfold was used. Especially since it seems like beheadings were common and public and all these guys would have witnessed other men being beheaded and how swift and easy it will be - not like they really had to be dragged fighting it. But those pics are hot. And the demeanor of the men kneeling and waiting for the chop with a calm resolve, reminds me of the film of Weideman walking to the guillotine and being positioned on it. No resistance or hesitation or fear.
