First corpses of 2013 are here!
There has been a bloody start to the new year on New South Wales roads, with two people killed in a head-on crash on the state's north coast.
A man and a woman died in the smash on the Pacific Highway at Bangalow, about 15 kilometres south-west of Byron Bay, at 2.20am on Tuesday.
Police said the man and woman were driving in opposite directions when they collided head-on near the intersection with Possum Creek Road. They died at the scene.
There were no passengers in either of the vehicles.
One north-bound and one south-bound lane of the Pacific Highway have been closed to traffic while police investigate the cause of the crash, and drivers have been warned to expect delays in the area on Tuesday.
The deaths bring the state's holiday road toll to 12.
On Monday, a 23-year-old man was killed in a crash with two other vehicles on the Pacific Highway at Tabbimoble, about 80 kilometres north of Grafton.
Police said the man was driving north on the Pacific Highway, about 1.5 kilometres north of the Iluka Road turn-off, when his Ford Laser and two other vehicles collided just before 10am.
Emergency services were unable to revive the young driver, who died at the scene.
