I dislike the word 'Nigger'. I live in an area where white British people are a minority - My family are the only white British in our street. I have several 'black' friends - they refer to themselves as black; black african; afro carribean; I recently bumped into a black friend and we walked together sharing news. My friend spotted another black friend walking towards us, but on the other side of the road. To get his attention, he yelled loudly 'Wassup Nigga', and was met with the friendly response 'hey bro...'

I frowned at this use of the term 'nigga' ..and he laughed and said ' well its like this see. Its OK for a black man to call another black man 'nigga'...but you can't use it cause your white and that would be racist see.'

'Nigger' was a hate-word used by whites to humiliate blacks, so what did the blacks do? They took the sting out of it by adopting it as their own and using it to refer to each other. Isn't that how ghetto-speak always works? But whites aren't from the ghetto. They've always used the word as a racist insult, so coming from the mouth of a white man it still sounds offensive. I can think of a close parallel to the word 'nigger': the word 'queer'. Certain sections of the gay community use it quite freely - I don't like it personally - but they still find it insulting coming from straight people (unless they're joking with their straight friends, of course.)

It works exactly the same here in Holland. Only if you have a native brown-black skin, you can call another darkie 'nigger' (neger, pronounce nayger, in Dutch). And they even prefer calling each other that. But do it as a white man and photos of what happens to you then will appear here on CDG.

same here in germany - for whites "nigger" is an absolutly no go - also if the talking people are white only and also as a joke between whites

Same here - not a word I'd ever use, tzo black or white. But if black guys use it between themselves, reclaiming it and knowing it's meant that way, that's OK.
And I don't like the word 'queer' either - don't use and normally take as an insult. BUT if a straight friend is able to to use a word like queer or faggot with me, and me take it in the right spirit and him know me well enough to know that I will, that's a real mark of trust. Shows he's completely relaxed about me beinmg gay, trusts me enough to make a joke of it.

I'm always on the fence about it. I used to despise the word, and never would I use it. My view is this, not all black people deserve the name, "nigger", that's where racism is. When someone calls any black person a nigger. However, there are people out there that do deserve the name. I have known several black people out there that are smart, well spoken, articulate people. Then there are the, be-bopping, wear their pants to their ankles, angry, violent, can't and won't speak normal understandable English. Those people (not all black BTW) are what to me the word nigger describes. That doesn't mean I hate them. Now I know the argument. "Well they cannot help it, it is just the way they were raised and taught." or "It is their culture." Bullshit. I knew a guy that I had gone to school with since we were small children all the way through high school. We don't exactly live in the ghetto or in a big city. We live in a fairly small city. But you know what? He sounds like all the "thugs" you see in rap videos, the ones who grew up in major cities. No, he made the CHOICE to speak the way he does, he made the CHOICE to wear his pants to his ankles. He has the education to speak at least fairly well, he was raised in a good neighborhood with good parents (I knew his family). That is a nigger. Now I still prefer not to use the word because I don't know what goes on in the random persons life, I don't label all blacks in that way. But if they flaunt it off, that's exactly what they want to be known as, it's just that unless you are one of their own you better not call them that. It's just like the word, "fag". I say nigga alot when im talkin with my friends regardless of their color. Its just part of the vocabulary. But straight up if im mad at you ill call you a nigger regardless of your color as well.

There is an attitude around here that there is a difference between a black person and a nigger. A black person is "like every one else" working,not in a gang,not starting trouble, stuff expected of a good citizen. But black or not if you are goin out startin shit with folks, stealing, bein sketch, and just a shitty person you are being a nigger.

I know some people say its weird for white folks to say "nigga" (fuck it) but I think its a bit weird that an English dude is sayin it. Maybe im ignorant but did English people refer to black people as niggers as well back in the day?

I think it is a bit similar for gay people using the word "queer." I am like, "Huh?"
