- The New Year has only just begun, but already six people have died in Australia.
A man has been shot dead, another glassed and a third had part of his nose cut off in a series of violent incidents across Adelaide as South Australians ushered in the new year.
Police made more than 100 arrests for minor behavioural offences but say the majority of revellers partied "safely and lawfully".
In the most serious incident, an 18-year-old man was shot in the chest at suburban Warradale at about 7.40pm (CDT) after an altercation with a 17-year-old youth and died later in hospital.
The teenager was arrested and police said they expected to charge him with murder.
"The shooting is not a random incident, as it is believed the two men were known to each other," a police spokesman said.
In other incidents, a man was found in the city in the early hours of Tuesday morning with stab wounds to the back of his head consistent with having been glassed.
At suburban Panorama, a group of men gatecrashed a party where they attacked revellers.
One of the partygoers suffered stab wounds and another had part of his nose cut off.
At the major public events, both in the city and at regional centres, police had a strong presence and said most people were well-behaved.
However, 121 people were arrested for behavioural offences and another 29 were reported and could face charges later.
On the roads, 36 people tested positive for alcohol and 15 for drugs after police breath-tested more than 3700 drivers.
Meanwhile, firefighters were kept busy when a scrub fire sparked by a stray firework threatened homes at Willunga, south of Adelaide.
The Country Fire Service brought the blaze under control before midnight.
