Peak ground acceleration measures how hard the earth shakes in a given geographic area during an earthquake.

PGA during the Tohuku Earthquake was 2.99 g, shaking so violent people and furniture were thrown into the air in Miyagi Prefecture, 75 km from the epicentre.

No footage from the area exist and we will never know what a PGA of 2.99 is really like but to people in Miyagi this must have looked like the end of the world.

It becomes impossible to stand upright when PGA rezches 1.24, shaking in Miyagi must have been so extreme even if you lie down you will roll.
