This Christmas seems to have been particularly violent in the Uk, with no fewer than 14 murders across the country in the past week, mostly young guys.

01:20 Christmas Eve

Rikki James Todd, 19, North Tyneside

The teenager suffered serious head injuries after he was attacked outside the Halfway House pub in Station Road, Camperdown, North Tyneside. Mr Todd was treated at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, but later died from his injuries.

Northumbria Police say two 17-year-old youths were charged with grievous bodily harm before the victim died.

Interesting figures, but more meaningful when the total population in those countries is taken into account.
Below:
the first figure is the number of deaths according to Platinum;
the second is the number of million inhabitants in 2011 (so Brazil counted 203 million people in 2011);
the third is the number of deaths per million inhabitants (so Brazil had almost 6 murders per million, UK only 0.23).
I listed them in order of deadliness (Brazil most dangerous, USA safest (but only this Christmas!)).

Brazil 1211 203 5,97
Iraq I27 30 4.23
Syria 45 23 1.96
South Africa 83 49 1.69
Greece 17 11 1.55
Pakistan 142 187 0.76
Spain 28 46 0.61
Indonesia 138 238 0.58
Germany 42 82 0.51
Italy 31 61 0.51
France 26 65 0.40
India 475 1210 0.39
China 321 1341 0.24
UK 14 61 0.23
Egypt 17 83 0.20
USA 56 311 0.18

Some figures surprise me (USA very low, Syria lower than I expected, remind me NOT to go on holiday in Brazil!).
Would be interesting to have the figures for Mexico and some other places (Liberia, Bulgaria etc).

Fascinating. I have been in countries like South Africa where I felt very safe - felt more unsafe in downtown Nairobi or Naples. It often depends on where one goes within a city or country.
