Three people were killed and more than 4,000 passengers and crew were rescued last night after a packed cruise liner began capsizing off the Italian coast after running aground.

Twenty-four British holidaymakers were on the Costa Concordia which had left port at 7pm for a seven-day Mediterranean Cruise - but within two hours, it ran aground in the sea with a major electrical fault.

The 13 deck liner then began to take on water after hitting rocks creating a 160ft gash in the hull, near the island of Giglio, off the Tuscan coast,
Passengers said the ship had begun to sink so much it was difficult to launch lifeboats, while some said they saw holiday-makers leaping into the water to swim to safety.

Costa Concordia Accident

One heck of a way to start a vacation. The bigger we build things, the more dramatic the failures and accidents become. The evacuation drill practice was scheduled for today, Saturday, at 5PM, day(s) after setting sail. One would think that they would go over this information before setting sail. Emergency procedures are covered on planes before they can depart; I would have thought it would be similar with cruise ships. From some perspectives, it looks almost like a toy ship in a bathtub or similar to the sinking pirate ship in the live show at Treasure Island in Las Vegas. I wonder how long it will be before the blame game starts. Do they attempt to salvage the ship and make repairs/refurbish or does it become the newest addition to the underwater artificial marine/coral reef ecosystem?

You would think with modern engineering, technology and materials that opening up a gash this large in the hull would be a little more difficult.

This is a view of a ocean liner that we do not get to see that often.

Amazing only 3 people died though

Now the body count is estimated to be as high as eight and could go higher as there are 69 passengers still unaccounted for. It could have been much worse had something similar happened out in the open seas. The listing of the boat, the descriptions of the damage as it tilted to the side and the exposed hull bring back memories of the Poseidon Adventure. Don't know if I would really want to go on a cruise, but if it is your time and your number is up, there is not much you can do about it.

Lights out!

Dozens of Bulgarians were on that ship during the wreck and were scared shitless.

FIVE more bodies found as divers use explosives to blow holes in hull

The bodies of five more passengers have been found in the wreckage of the Costa Concordia taking the confirmed death toll to 11.

Four men and one woman, in their 50s and 60s, were discovered together at the front of the cruise liner below the waterline. It comes after Italian navy divers set off explosives to create openings in the hull of the ship that ran aground near a Tuscan island on Friday.

The captain is in serious trouble. I heard the Italian dialog between the captain and the coast guard ordering the captain to return to the ship.

They are calling it the modern day Titanic. Not in terms of lives lost, but human error and terror.
