Some fine craftsmanship when into the manufacture of the mobile guillotine. See how extra weight is added to the blade to compensate for the shorter drop? That's technological innovation. Any small army could easily execute those they felt were deserving. Why can't we have that kind of quality today?
 
I especially like the four guillotined heads on the lower left - all sharing the same tray, guillotined together. I wonder how the order of those guys was picked, and what each dude was thinking when one of his fellow bandits head chopped off and dropped into the basket. Watching the head picked up and placed on the tray. Also wild: they're all clean shaved. Can you imagine what they were thinking that morning as they shaved knowing that they were going to the guillotine and soon their severed heads would be on a tray and photographed for posterity!

Ya gotta wonder what those men dreamed of in jail before going to the guillotine. Bet they dreamed of getting their necks locked into those wooden stocks and then hearing and feeling the blade dropping down.

I don't think they slept. I bet they were fucking and sucking. I know I'd be if I was going to the guillotine and painless.

Nah, I don't really think it was shut down to basic function: there are so many accounts from the French Revolution and beyond that almost everyone went to the guillotine without a struggle, and seemingly without fear or terror. Even the video of the Wiedeman execution shows his walking to the guillotine almost willingly and without hesitation. There was about 15 seconds in that video that he was under the blade as the executioner fixed the lunette...I've always wondered what he was thinking as he looked into the basket. Just like you have to wonder what every guy looking into the basket was thinking when he heard the drum roll begin. I've always figured I'd stretch my neck out and hope my head has a soft landing so I can enjoy the endorphins as my head is lifted up. It really is wild how photos of almost all guillotined heads have a cum face - which you know wasn't the expression on their face when they were looking into the basket.
 
That men's chopped-off heads have a cum face is right. Joseph Ughetto got the guillotine in Provence, France at age 19 and his face has that look on it. Or, it could be just anger...the kid expected the President to change his sentence from death to prison time up to the last day, plus his dad told the judge at his son's trial "I ask for the death penalty for my boy." The guy blamed everyone but himself for shooting a farmer, his wife and their two little kids and their old servant and I think he got about $40 U.S. out of the robbery. France was better off with Ughetto's head off. And, the kid left a pretty handsome teenage head for us to look at! Ughetto beheaded when he was 19.JPG
