New Zealand authorities on Thursday were searching for a Canadian couple who were believed to have died when their rental van went over a cliff on a rugged road.

Police said they were trying to recover the bodies of 25-year-old Connor Hayes and 24-year-old Joanna Lam off the Haast Pass road, which connects the west coast of the South Island to the rugged interior.

The couple were last seen Sept. 10 in stormy conditions. Parts of their wrecked rental van were found this week in the Haast River, about 80 meters (260 feet) below the road. Police believe they either drove over a cliff inadvertently or were swept off by a landslide.

Inspector John Canning said the chances they survived are "extremely remote."

The pair had been touring the country and Lam was due to start work Monday as an imaging specialist at Nelson Hospital.
 
They took a wrong turn and are now CDGs Perhaps they weren't used to driving on the left ?
 
That part of my country is very mountainous and lots of curves and the clearance between the road and edge of cliff can be round about 1-3 feet on average. Due to these driving conditions every bend acts like a natural blind spot for those unfamiliar for the roads/tracks.

New Zealand can be a very rugged and unforgiving place due to the geography and it topography.

A story that shouldn't be funny was these other tourists got lost in one of our national parks and 30 minutes after being rescued, drowned because they drove off a wharf....death is going to get you one way or another.

I do not blame NZ for the increasing tourist deaths in NZ over the years, just tourist not understanding how tough and wild our wildness is.
