I am a morgue technician ask me anything

Yes.

You do not remove clothing, wash or handle the body until clearance has been obtained by the forensic technician and/or the assigned detective, who have priority in examining the body.

The actual autopsy may be delayed until this has been accomplished.

Protocols may vary in different U.S. jurisdictions.

What is the fastest an autopsy report and DNA test be done?

Autopsies are one-two-three, bam. They are done very quickly.

The DNA test depends on if the facility has an automated PCR machine to increase the sample size. Square two is to compare the results with the national data base, which is done in a federal facility.

It may take weeks to get the results back for the autopsy report.

And DNA swabs are not always taken in many facilities. Some small towns in the U.S. still have the coroner system.

If a physican signs a cause of death and the identificatiin is known, and no reason to suggest a sex crime, they might not take swabs at all.

Ever get a guy in there who was sexually assaulted before dying? Is there anything special you have to do when a body comes in and shows signs of sexual assault?

Never seen such a case for real no. As regards to what can be done during the actual autopsy a detailed exam for any abrasions, hematomas, and lacerations of the anus that can usually be seen if the victim is examined shortly after the sexual assault with anal intercourse.

The conditions of the victim's clothing and any signs of rips, tears, or other damage and other foreign materials should be noted as well.

Clothing (especially underwear) is collected and wrapped in an evidence bag.

Special protocol is then strictly followed.

Hi Meatpie, do you know what kind of professions are allowed to spend time alone in the morgue in North America?

My colleague Dupytrens is more suitable to answer that question I am not familiar with the exact organization.

Sadly more and more morgues are installing secuirty cameras that record morgue activity 24/7 so they quickly catch any necrophile playing with the bodies. :rolleyes1:
