COVID-19 Pandemic World Updates

Thanks Meatpie!

Without wishing anyone ill there are times when I almost feel that Donald Trump deserves to be an exception.
Now no one would claim that the World Health Organisation is perfect, it may well be that it is soft on China and its alleged initial attempts to deny Coronavirus but however imperfect it may be this is not the time to weaken it. But disagreeing with Trump is a capital offence, at least in his eyes. And if the world suffers then that is their fault for not accepting his infallibility.
The true measure of the man can be seen in his recent press conference. A pure glorification of his divinity and the lives he saved by his actions alone. As always the facts are irrelevant, to him false news. And the most scary thing is he probably believes his own publicity.
From this side of the pond the man is unbelievable. Roll on the election, surely there is no way he will be re elected, is there?
That's president blowhard for you.

Medical examiner dies after contracting coronavirus from corpse

BANGKOK (Thailand) - A new report in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine states a medical examiner likely died from COVID-19 after coming in contact with a deceased individual.

This is likely the first known occurrence of death among personnel in a forensic unit.
The medical examiner is from Bangkok, Thailand, and the report from March 20 states it was likely that the virus was transmitted through the direct exposure with the corpse because of the low number of cases at the time. Thailand only had 272 cases, and the only other medical professional who had the virus was a nurse assistant. Most COVID-19 cases were imported from outside the country when the report was submitted.
It was not a routine practice at the time for medical examiners to check for COVID-19 in Thailand.
The report calls for forensic professionals to start using protective wear to help prevent contracting the virus. It also suggests using operation room cleaning procedures in pathology and forensic units.

Johns Hopkins University data shows Thailand has 2,672 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of April 16. The country has a population of more than 69 million.

I cannot believe how this insidious virulent virus is traveling to every country discounting borders and infecting entire
populations!:totalshock::totalshock::totalshock:

Yes, there are many COVID-19 deaths in my area people I know, doctors I know are in critical condition in hospital, people I grew up with.

Meanwhile the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus originated last year, has raised its official Covid-19 death toll by 50%, adding 1,290 fatalities.

Wuhan officials attributed the new figure to updated reporting and deaths outside hospitals. China has insisted there was no cover-up.

It has been accused of downplaying the severity of its virus outbreak.

Wuhan's 11 million residents spent months in strict lockdown conditions, which have only recently been eased.

The latest official figures bring the death toll in the city in China's central Hubei province to 3,869, increasing the national total to more than 4,600.

China has confirmed nearly 84,000 coronavirus infections, the seventh-highest globally, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

The idea that China has had only 84,000 is ludicrous. Chinese govt. is notorious for hiding facts. I'm not anti-Chinese people/culture, but fully suspect of all their govt. information.

Sorry to hear that. Meatpie. Keep yourself safe!

Sorry to hear that. Meatpie. Keep yourself safe!
Let me add my support to the wishes and admonitions of Deaddirty.
Please take care of yourself please Meatpie.
I know we all have our fantasies about death but this is now reality. So are as it is possible keep two metres from everyone else excepting any members of your household. That is the U.K. scientific advice. Not sure how reliable it is.
Hopefully we will all get through this. It seems that Oxford researchers believe they may be a vaccine in production by autumn. Maybe optimistic but Oxford brains tend to be the amongst the best in the world and they are not in this for profit.
I guess a working vaccine is the only way this nightmare will come to an end. Until then lockdowns and social isolation is probably inevitable and however much it interferes with our lives it is better than the alternative.
So take care and look after yourself everyone until then

Are people who live in Sofia allowed to return home?

It seems his latest idea is to attack and try and persuade others to attack those Democratic Governors who disagree with his premature attempt to end lockdown and who consider that their duty to try and preserve life is more important than the making of profit. And pleading the constitution in aid.
Trump likes awards. Okay every life , even his, is precious so perhaps tongue in cheek but perhaps he could be considered for the Spencer Percival medal. ( for non Brits and perhaps some of us also try google or Wikipedia.)

Thanks everyone for the updates and support.

Are people who live in Sofia allowed to return home?

People shouldn't have left home in the first place the roads are blocked and there is virtually no traffic as anyone who attempts to travel without a serious reason can go to prison for 3 years.

There have been several young guys who tried to break the rules and are currently in prison also several politicans who told people on TV to ignore the measures are in jail.

We also had several cases of COVID-19 patients who escaped from hospitals but were all later arrested too.

Global death toll exceeds 150,000

The number of people known to have died worldwide since the outbreak began has passed the 150,000 mark, according to two organisations tracking the data.
Both Johns Hopkins University and the Reuters news agency, which are keeping separate counts, have said the figure has been exceeded, with the former putting it at 150,948.
The first death came in the central Chinese city of Wuhan on 9 January. It took 83 days for the first 50,000 deaths to be recorded and just eight more for the toll to climb to 100,000. It took another eight days to go from 100,000 to 150,000, according to Reuters.
In many countries, official data includes only deaths reported in hospitals, not those in homes or nursing homes, so the tolls are likely to be significant underestimates.
The United States has recorded the most confirmed Covid-19, with more than 680,000 detected infections. Spain is next with around 188,000 cases, followed by Italy.
Johns Hopkins University has counted more than 2.2m cases worldwide. Due to suspected underreporting and differing testing regimes, that figure is also likely to be an underestimate.

Spain coronavirus deaths hit 20,000

The coronavirus death toll in Spain, one of the world’s worst-hit countries by the pandemic, has topped 20,000 after 565 new fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours.
The number of the total dead from Covid-19 in the country hit 20,043 on Saturday. The rise was slightly lower than Friday, when an additional 585 deaths were recorded.
The number of overall coronavirus cases rose to 191,726 on Saturday from 188,068 on Friday, the country’s health ministry added.

In the UK, the Queen’s birthday on Tuesday will not be marked by gun salutes, in what is believed to be a first, due to the coronavirus crisis.
A Buckingham Palace source said the Queen’s 94th birthday would not be marked in any special way, adding that any calls with family would be kept private.
The source told PA: “There will be no gun salutes – Her Majesty was keen that no special measures were put in place to allow gun salutes as she did not feel it appropriate in the current circumstances.”
It follows reports that the pandemic has also forced Princess Beatrice to cancel her royal wedding due to take place next month.

Record daily jump of Covid-19 cases in Russia

The Covid-19 death toll in Russia has risen to 313, as the country recorded a record daily jump in confirmed infections.
The number of coronavirus-related deaths rose by 40 overnight, with authorities reporting 4,785 new cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 36,793.
Moscow, which became the centre of Russia’s coronavirus outbreak and was also the first region in the country to introduce a lockdown, recorded 2,649 new cases and 21 new deaths, the Russian coronavirus crisis response centre said.
Infections began rising sharply this month, although the country had reported far fewer infections than many western European nations in the outbreak’s early stages, Reuters reported.
However, like some other nations, health authorities in Russia are not carrying out mass testing. Private testing results in Moscow among people without symptoms suggest the virus has penetrated more deeply into its population than official data shows.
Elsewhere, Indonesia has reported 15 new Covid-19 deaths, taking the total to 535, as well as 325 new confirmed infections. It takes the total number of infections in the country, the world’s fourth most populous with a quarter of a billion people, to 6,248.
A study by the London-based Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases released last month estimated that as few as 2% of Indonesia’s coronavirus infections have been reported.
On Friday, Indonesia surpassed the Philippines to become the country with the highest number of infections in south-east Asia. It has the most number of deaths in Asia outside of China.
