3D Modeling/Animation Questions

I apologize up front if this topic has been addressed in another thread. I did some forum searches but couldn't find any related discussions.

If I wanted to create my own 3D graphic renderings of hangings, what tool (tools) should I use? In addition, are there pre-made models available (especially of people, body parts, etc.) for those tools?

I could (and probably will) do some Google searches for this, but I wanted to know what people around here would recommend before confusing myself with all the information I expect to get out of Google.
