On July 28, near the village of Mkhi, Semenovsky district, Chernihiv region, a reconnaissance group from one of the reconnaissance battalions of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, during search operations in a forest, discovered and attacked a Russian sabotage group and wiped them all out.

Aftermath after Russian marines ambush Ukrainian troops somewhere in Kursk.

Meanwhile some new Ukrainian soldiers have refused to fire at the enemy and are struggling with basic combat movements, according to the Associated Press.

Citing commanders and fellow fighters, it was said that a few new recruits had even walked away from their posts, abandoning the battlefield altogether.

One fighter stressed there were still motivated soldiers, but highlighted the problem nonetheless.

Commanders have blamed recruits for a string of territorial losses, including those near the city of Pokrovsk - as well as Russia's superiority in ammunition and air power.

"Some people don't want to shoot. They see the enemy in the firing position in trenches but don't open fire... that is why our men are dying," said a battalion commander in Ukraine’s 47th Brigade.

"When they don't use the weapon, they are ineffective."

The more recently conscripted Ukrainians are said to be a far cry from the battle-hardened fighters who flocked to join the war in the first year of the invasion.

The new troops are said to lack even a minimal level of training, commanders and soldiers from four brigades defending the Pokrovsk area told AP.

"The main problem is the survival instinct of newcomers. Before, people could stand until the last moment to hold the position. Now, even when there is light shelling of firing positions, they are retreating," said a soldier with the 110th Brigade.
