Vanuatu orders the evacuation of entire island as Monaro volcano may blow

Vanuatu has ordered the evacuation of an entire island home to 11,000 people as an erupting volcano threatened to explode.

Boats will spend the next week ferrying residents off Ambae where the Monaro volcano spewed lava, smoke, and ash since Sunday.

More than half the island's population within 6.5km of the crater already fled to other parts of Ambae, but the government decided they could risk anyone's lives.

And Katla in Iceland has been on intermittent alert for a while now, though the threat level seems to have dropped this month. Katla eruptions can vary from minor to very big indeed - one at 10.600 BP produced ashfalls which can still be detected in Norway, Denmark and Scotland.

Actually I'd guess it's fairly low probability - a lot of earthquake swarms are false alarms, and if there is an eruption brewing there's no particular reason to expect a really big one.
