A grandson of former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey has died of a suspected drug overdose.

Simon Day, the lead singer in an aspiring indie rock group, was battling heroin addiction and had recently left rehab, friends say.

Lord Carey said his death had been a ‘grievous blow’ to the entire family.

Mr Day’s body was discovered at his rented houseshare in Canterbury – two days after it is believed he took the fatal overdose.

His death was the final tragic twist in a young life which began with a broken home.

Friends said he had come to idolise drug addict musician Pete Doherty

His mother, Rachel – the eldest of Lord Carey’s four children – was involved in a bitter divorce from his father Dean Morris after marrying young.

The couple split when Mr Day was a baby and he was estranged from Mr Morris for most of his life. The Daily Mail revealed in 1990 how the ‘very, very sad’ experience of his daughter’s divorce strengthened Lord Carey’s firm support for family values and opposition to divorce.
