A professional surfer is in morgue at the age of 16 after breaking his neck trying to catch a wave in Barbados during Hurricane Irma.

Zander Venezia, from Barbados, reportedly fell off his board and hit a shallow reef at a beach called Box by Box, the World Surf League said.
He and other surfers were riding a swell generated by the Category Five 185mph hurricane.

After he went in to test the waves, he told fellow surfer Dylan Graves it was the 'best wave of his life'.

Paying tribute online, professional surfer Dylan Slater said: "For those who don't know, Zander passed away while surfing today after catching what he said was the best wave of his life.

"He was knocked unconscious when he hit his head on the reef, possibly braking his neck and taking a long hold down for a number of waves.

"Friends and fellow surfers aided in a rescue attempt but his injuries were greater than could be addressed making him the first victim, by default, of Hurricane Irma."

Sad...looks like he had a lot of potential to be great...pro surfer at age 16 is pretty incredible

'Best wave of his life' turned out to be best wave of his death.

Professionals probably surf during hurricanes all the time, but to people not obsessed with the sport it sounds idiotic.
