EUROPE HAS A HORRIFIC HISTORY THAT CONTINUES TO AFFECT MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD WHO HAVE TO LIVE DAILY WITH THE THOUGHTS OF LOST, MURDERED RELATIVES.

This is the Mauthausen Concentration Camp (known from the summer of 1940 as Mauthausen-Gusen Concentration Camp) grew to become a large group of Nazi concentration camps that was built around the villages of Mauthausen and Gusen in Upper Austria, roughly 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of the city of Linz.

Initially a single camp at Mauthausen, it expanded over time and by the summer of 1940, the Mauthausen-Gusen had become one of the largest labour camp complexes in German-controlled Europe.

Apart from the four main sub-camps at Mauthausen and nearby Gusen, more than 50 sub-camps, located throughout Austria and southern Germany, used the inmates as slave labour. Several subordinate camps of the KZ Mauthausen complex included quarries, munitions factories, mines, arms factories and Me 262 fighter-plane assembly plants.

In January 1945, the camps, directed from the central office in Mauthausen, contained roughly 85,000 inmates. The death toll remains unknown, although most sources place it between 122,766 and 320,000 for the entire complex. The camps formed one of the first massive concentration camp complexes in Nazi Germany, and were the last ones to be liberated by the Western Allies or the Soviet Union.

The two main camps, Mauthausen and Gusen I, were also the only two camps in the whole of Europe to be labelled as "Grade III" camps, which meant that they were intended to be the toughest camps for the "Incorrigible Political Enemies of the Reich".Unlike many other concentration camps, intended for all categories of prisoners, Mauthausen was mostly used for extermination through labour of the intelligentsia, who were educated people and members of the higher social classes in countries subjugated by the Nazi regime during World War II.

Germany's Darkest Hour!

It's unfortunate that humanity won't learn from this horrific event. Give a dictator too much power and tragedy is likely to occur. It is still happening in different parts of the world. We need to watch our own governments carefully as they attempt to take away our rights. You can never be certain when a leader wants to be a dictator. George Bush and Dick Cheney come to mind. They were on their way to making a huge power grab.

This history is real and terrible, but now in 1976 in argentina have more cent concetration camps and more people is murdered for militar and civil corporation in perversed union. thanks meat for our conciencies, and repeat no more this tragedy for humanity.

Such an extraordinary series. You have outdone yourself once again, Meatpie.

True facts and many sad ... but humanity has not learned, but as a living hope ...

Die fahne hoch!

It was horrific time. I'm glad I didn't live then, and I thank soviet and allies soldiers, which stopped this awful.

In heaven we are told, there are only
things and only beautiful songs. Why
would heaven open it's gates for a human soul? We
were made of dirt but weren't we supposed to
improve from dirt to something more, we really
haven't have we? Do you believe in mankind? I know
i don't ... There is an afterlife or so i'm
told...But i have no idea what it is. Maybe we
have a second chance, only to make sure that we
make all the same mistakes over again. Isn't in
time we stopped hoping for a change and started
making a difference? Do you believe in nuclear
war? I know i do...
