I don't think anyone is claiming only people above a certain age get seriously ill or die - but for the vast majority of under-50s it's quite minor. Unless something different is happening in the US? It's always possible the virus has mutated there which would be very bad news - but given how little testing has been done there, I'd guess it's far more likely that the number of mild infections in younger people has been drastically underestimated so the proportion of serious illnesses seems much higher than it is.
