Temperatures in much of Britain are forecast to soar to more than 30C (86F) on the longest day of the year but this seems tolerable compared to 50°C (122F°) during the day in Phoenix, Arizona.
The heat in the USA is blamed on a large and persistent high-pressure system currently scorching parts of California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.
