Meatpie's Atlas of Forensic Medicine [Part 1]

Fatalities by charcoal grills

The number of deaths from carbon monoxide intoxication by burning barbecue charcoal has increased in recent years particularly in Asia and even in Germany the number of cases has risen. A total of nine deaths were documented at the institute of Legal Medicine in Hamburg in the period from September 2009 to October 2010. It can be assumed that seven cases were suicide, one case might have been accidental and one case is unclear. Of the decedents seven were male. Cherry red lividity as an indication for carbon monoxide intoxication was not found in all cases. In this context the post-mortem examination as well as the scene investigation should be performed very carefully because principally it is possible for a suicide to be overlooked as well as simulated. The determination of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) should be performed regularly. Furthermore forensic autopsy can provide information as to possible third party involvement.

Defleshing the head allows for better visualization of skull injuries

When attempting to identify the remains of an unknown decomposed individual, it may be necessary to deflesh the skull. This man was assaulted by unknown means. He was found in a state of mild decomposition which became more advanced by the next morning, even with refrigeration. At autopsy, epidural and subdural hematomas, as well as acute and healing skull fractures and remote craniotomies were found. Note the large composite calvarial graft in the left frontal, temporal, and parietal regions. Defleshing of the skull provided for a more accurate and detailed recording of identifiying features. When necessary, fractured or fragmented cranial remains can be repaired with glue to provide better visualization of injuries.

The Effect of Upright Posture on Decomposition

Decomposition studies have elucidated many different factors affecting the rate and process of decomposition. However, no study has previously investigated potential effects of posture on the decomposition process. The following study involves a research project conducted at theAnthropological Research Facility at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville to determine whether the upright posture affects the rate of decomposition. The project began on June 15, 2011, and wasconducted for a period of approximately sixty days. The study included three different bodies, each placed in a different sitting position. The first was placed against a constructed, plywood wall and sat on the ground. The second body was placed in a camping chair which was nailed into the ground. The final body served as a control for the experiment, and was laid flat on the ground. The results of this study provide more information regarding the possible effects of different variables on the decomposition process and expected rate of decomposition. Furthermore, the study provides a base study for further human decomposition research in the area of posture and body position.

Thank you.

Fatal Gyrocopter Accident

Two persons were flying in a gyrocopter when deteriorating weather conditions resulted in the gyrocopter crashing. A middle-aged male pilot and an elderly male passenger died from multiple injuries sustained in the accident.

The pilot had extensive trauma to the head, torso, and both upper and lower limbs with multiple compound comminuted fractures. Similarly, the passenger showed extensive trauma to the head with multiple lacerations and abrasions to the face and compound fracturing of the skull. There were multiple abrasions and lacerations with exposure of thoracic viscera in the region of the left axilla and over the sternum in the midline. There were multiple abrasions and lacerations with extrusion of abdominal viscera from the left lateral abdominal wall. There were multiple lacerations and abrasions on the left and right arms. There was compound fracturing of the distal left humerus and a closed fracture of the right humerus and compound fracture-dislocation of the right wrist. There were multiple abrasions and lacerations with compound fracturing of the left and right femora, tibiae, fibulae, and bones of both feet.

The extensive nature of the cranial and post-cranial trauma in both the pilot and the passenger is indicative of a high-force impact of a powered vehicle without a protective cabin. The pattern of skeletal injury is typical of impact involving an extreme amount of decelerative force directed along the axial skeleton. Postmortem CT images showed extensive bone disruption of both the pilot and the passenger, with slightly more marked destruction of the skeleton of the pilot.

Self-inflicted gunshot to the forehead with a 12/70 caliber shotgun

Case from Germany. Self-inflicted gunshot to the forehead with a 12/70 caliber shotgun. The scalp is torn open in several long stretches; the actual bullet defect cannot be identified. The bony skull is largely dismantled, and large parts of the brain are no longer inside the skull. There are short, separate skin tears on both sides of the nose.

Unusual suicide with self-bondage and continuous supply of butane gas

The body was found in a sitting position on a mattress with adhesive tape and airtight closed plastic bag on the head to which a shower hose was attached the other end of which was connected to a butane gas cartridge.

There's a body farm about 18 miles from my house. There are always a lot of vultures in the area now.

Patterned injury from a fence post

uejkevi.jpg

This individual was ejected from a motor vehicle and impacted a fence at a high rate of speed, leaving a patterned injury from the top of the fence post contacting his chest. No further info.

A patterned injury has a distinct pattern that may reproduce the characteristics of the object causing the injury. The pattern may be caused by the impact of a weapon or other object on the body, or by contact of the body with a patterned surface.

Contact wound between the eyes from a .357 Magnum revolver

Contact wound, between the eyes from a .357 Magnum revolver.

Massive injuries from contact handgun wounds of the head, when they do occur, are associated with Magnum calibers, e.g., the .357 Magnum, the .44 Magnum, or high-velocity, high-energy cartridge loadings of medium caliber weapons, e.g., .38 Special +P+ cartridges. These cartridges can inflict contact wounds that in their severity mimic wounds from rifles and shotguns. Such a wound is illustrated in Fig.1, where the deceased shot himself in the head with a .357 Magnum revolver.
