My mates and I just tried being hanged by armpits this afternoon because we once read a story about a French teenager was executed by this way (over 200 years ago). It was a dangerous game, so a mate asked a friend who studied medical science to help.
Before "execution", I removed my vest on upper body in order to attach a stethoscope. This stethoscope was connected with a laptop and my heartbeat could be amplified with the speakers. Of course, the main purpose to do so was to make sure I was safe. Then I stood on a block, which was around 40 cm tall. Two ropes were used in order to tie two nooses around my armpits. Tow mates tightened the ropes under my arms. Everything done, the block under my feet was removed suddenly!
The effect impacted on my chest immediately. I didn't need to struggle or twitch, because my mind was peaceful, but I couldn't feel my pecs were more and more numb. 3 minutes after beginning, my heart rate was around 60 (my resting heart rate was around 45~50 as I am a fencing athlete). Around 10 minutes later, I found my breath was becoming rapid. However, I didn't feel painful because I just couldn't help doing so. I was even unable to feel that I had pecs! Around 25 minutes later, I started fainting and my mates released me down from the noose.
I lay straight onto the floor, and my stiff penis gradually recovered later. However, the numbness in my pecs lasted for 2 hours around. And it took 40 minutes to make my heart rate came back to 50 bpm.
