Authorities in parts of central Europe issued disaster warnings and scrambled to reinforce flood defenses Sunday as rivers swelled by days of heavy rain threatened to burst their banks.

Several people have died or are missing in the floods in Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland since Thursday.

Worst flooding in 500 years

Aerial photos taken today show entire towns submerged in what experts now believe is the worst flood in Central Europe for over 500 years.

Rivers continue to rise in Germany and the Czech Republic

The Danube river flooded the old city of Passau, southern Germany
