One of the coldest winters of the past century was the Winter of 1928/1929. It was especially cold in late January and February with temperatures reaching down to -36°C in central Europe.
In the United States, January 1929 was also very cold especially in the northern states. The images are all from Croatia where in early January 1929 snow kept falling for several days without pause reaching up to 285 cm in height while the wind created snow dunes as tall as six meters.
Those days the people of Lika region left their houses through windows because the doors could not be opened. They dug tunnels through the snow to reach their neighbours and livestock.
