Lewis, right celebrating his last birthday, croaked at 18
A teenage cycling star tipped to ride in the Olympics has been killed in a bike crash whilst out training only five miles from home.
Lewis Balyckyi, 18 - described by his family as 'inspirational' and 'every parent's dream' - was cycling in preparation for a forthcoming event in France when he was in collision with a Ford Transit van.
Police and ambulance crews dashed to the crash scene but Lewis was thrown from his bike and suffered massive head injuries.
The tragedy occurred whilst Lewis was cycling along North Road, Walton-Le-Dale around 5pm on Tuesday. The road was closed for around four hours to allow accident investigation to take place.
Sergeant Gareth Hill said: 'The investigation into this collision is continuing and I would ask anybody who witnessed it to contact police.'
Local councillor Simon Moulton said: 'The road is long and straight with lots of little bends and there have been accidents there in the past.
'It is a really popular road for cyclists coming from Leyland into the village.'
