I came back to this photo thinking maybe I'd see something helpful I'd missed earlier. No such luck -- I am still, and truly, perplexed by that thing sticking out of him. There is one detail I just noticed: he's wearing such a nice shirt (beautiful shade of blue)!

OMG!! Thank you Phyzzi...all has now been made clear to me. What a shock that pipe is, and it really was totally invisible from the angle of the first photo!

HAHA...no Kees, no Kees, NO, NO, NO! I didn't ONCE think curlers. It looked like a rhino horn. That's really the closest I could come to deciphering what I was looking at. Like maybe he had come to a bad end in a drive-thru safari park. Though of course I knew that couldn't be it. I was stumped!
