Dozens Killed and more than 250,000 Evacuated as California Wildfires Spread

At least 25 people have been killed and more than 150,000 evacuated as two big wildfires rage in California, officials say.

West of Los Angeles, the Woolsey Fire has jumped a major highway and is now threatening coastal areas, including parts of Malibu.

Further north near Sacramento, the five victims were found in cars in a town that was destroyed by the Camp Fire.

Both fires are moving fast, fanned by strong winds.

One fire broke out near Thousand Oaks, an area about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles where an attacker killed 12 people on Wednesday, prompting the evacuation of 75,000 homes.

Residents have now been ordered to evacuate from several more towns to the west of Thousand Oaks, including Calabasas immediately south of Highway 101 and Malibu on the coast, as well as from the western edge of Los Angeles.

Thousands Under Mandatory Evacuation as Three Major Fires Spread in California

The Camp Fire in Northern California is now considered the most destructive fire in the state's modern history. In addition to killing at least nine people in Paradise, it has destroyed 6,453 structures.

Of those killed, five people were found in or near a vehicle and the other four were found in or outside a home.

The fast-moving blaze consumed most of Paradise, a town roughly 80 miles north of Sacramento.

Families described the scenes of panic and terror they lived while escaping.

The town is now mostly empty, and the main road littered with downed trees and power lines. Much of the brush and grasses were blackened along the valleys, and many trees were still burning. An estimated 52,000 people evacuated in Butte County, where Paradise is located.

Fire officials said three firefighters and some civilians were wounded but details about their injuries were unknown. About 35 people have been reported missing, authorities said.

Meanwhile more than 200,000 people have fled in Ventura County and Malibu due to the Woolsey Fire, officials said.

Tent City Forms in Chico Near Paradise



Thousands of climate refugees are currently staying at Walmart parking lots around the destroyed town of Paradise and a tent city has formed near Chico.

Approximately 52,000 people were forced to evacuate from the Paradise, CA and the surrounding towns as a result of the Camp Fire.

The World Bank Group predicts that climate change will force 140 million people to migrate between now and 2050, including 17 million people in Latin America and 4 million people in Mexico and Central America.
