BLOODY U S Naval Battle

This very manly,
intense illustration
depicts
the surprise
~~ ATTACK ~~
on the
Yankee Union USS Cumberland
by the
Rebel Confederate CSS Virginia
(a new kind of naval vessel, an ironclad, also known as
the MERRIMACK)
in the
BATTLE of HAMPTON ROADS, VIRGINIA
on March 8, 1862.

As a result of this battle,
the
Rebel Confederates wrecked two Yankee Union vessels:
sinking the
USS Cumberland and grounding the USS Congress.

A total of 261 Naval
Union Yankees got killed.

The next day, however, on March 9, 1862,
the Union ironclad vessel called the
Yankee Union MONITOR
quietly arrived at the scene
and attacked the
Rebel Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia (the MERRIMACK).

The two ironclad vessels fought each other to a standstill
... when the
Union MONITOR disengaged
and then the
CSS Virginia (the MERRIMACK)
also disengaged and headed back to safe harbor in Norfolk, VA.

Both sides claimed victory.

This battle became a total GAME CHANGER in world-wide naval warfare
.... marking the beginning of what would later become very deadly
