I'm not even sure what I'm looking at here, except that those are probably intestines on the left. So maybe this is the underside of an abdominal flap. It makes sense that discoveries relating to extreme cold would be made by the Russians.

Huh, apparently these occur during hypothermia. There's a few papers but they are behind a paywall...
