Cruelty is not the motive. The story is fiction, but it depicts established ancient warrior cultures and behaviors. The stages of the ritual are the capture of young men; sexual humiliation and rape; castration; beheading; and, finally, cooking and eating. The last stage is the most significant because it derives from ancient warrior beliefs that you can absorb a man's masculinity and verility by eating his flesh and internal organs.
