Smoke rises in the aftermath of rocket barrages that were launched from Gaza, in Ashkelon, Israel, on October 7

Good evening.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today declared his country was “at war” after Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a deadly barrage of rockets and sent gunmen into Israeli territory in a major escalation of the long-running conflict between the two sides.

Israeli authorities say over 100 people are dead and over 1,000 more wounded in Israel after the early morning surprise attack. Meanwhile, Palestinian authorities say nearly 200 people were killed after Israel launched air strikes. Fighting is still taking place on the ground.

Huge explosion as Israeli planes hit Gaza tower blocks

As part of Israel's retaliatory strikes, its warplanes have hit several buildings in the centre of Gaza City, including an 11-storey building called Palestine Tower.

It houses Hamas radio stations on the rooftop and also boasts a cinema.

The video below shows the moment the building was struck - it collapses soon after.

It's a bit after 11 p.m. in Tel Aviv. Here is my summary of what you need to know about Saturday's fighting between Israel and Hamas

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared his country "at war," after Palestinian militants from Gaza fired a deadly barrage of rockets and sent gunmen into Israeli territory Saturday morning. In response, Israel launched air strikes on Gaza, and fighting has continued throughout the day.

The surprise attack and subsequent fighting marks a major escalation of the long-running conflict between the two sides.

Here's the latest developments:

  • Death toll: Israeli authorities say at least 200 people are dead and more than 1,400 wounded in Israel. Meanwhile, Palestinian authorities say at least 232 Palestinians have died, and more than 1,600 are wounded.
  • A fresh round of attacks: A new round of rockets fired by Gaza militants on Saturday evening made direct hits on multiple locations inside Israel, including in Tel Aviv, according to Israeli authorities. In a Telegram post, the armed wing of Hamas — the militant group designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union and Israel — said it had fired an additional 150 rockets in response to the bombing of a residential tower in Gaza City.
  • Israelis captured: The Israel Defense Forces say Hamas has taken hostages and prisoners of war since it launched its surprise attack Saturday morning. The militant group claims it has dozens of captives. In videos geolocated and authenticated by CNN, Hamas fighters appear to take Israeli citizens and soldiers captive in and near Gaza.
  • What is Hamas saying: Senior Hamas member Saleh al-Arouri said the militant group, which runs Gaza, is "ready for the worst-case scenario, including a ground invasion, which will be the best for us to decide the ending of this battle."
  • What is Netanyahu saying: In a televised speech on Saturday evening carried by Reuters, Netanyahu said, "What happened today has never been seen in Israel. We will take mighty vengeance for this black day." He added, "Israel will reach every place Hamas is hiding," and warned residents of Gaza to leave now. He also commented on the captured Israelis. "I tell Hamas, you are responsible for wellbeing of captives. Israel will settle the score with anyone who harms them," Netanyahu said.
  • International reaction: President Joe Biden said in an address Saturday evening that the United States stands with Israel. The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET to address the situation. Countries and leaders from around the world reacted to the news, with many condemning the attacks and others calling for calm and restraint. Meanwhile, airlines have either canceled or dramatically reduced flights to Tel Aviv, and foreign offices and embassies are discouraging travel and advising caution to their nationals present in Israel.

Good evening.

More than 600 Israelis have been killed since Saturday, according to the press office of the Israeli government.

It adds that more than 100 people have been kidnapped, and more than 2,000 injured.

In Gaza, at least 313 people have been killed following Israeli air strikes, according to Palestinian officials.

It’s around 10pm in Gaza, where explosions have been lighting up the night sky in the last hour. Frantic diplomatic calls are still being made between various world leaders and the situation in southern Israel is very tense.

Here’s where things stand:

  • The United States defence secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford to head its “strike group” of forces as it sails to the eastern Mediterranean to be closer to Israel following Hamas’s “heinous” attacks.
  • US president Joe Biden told Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that “additional assistance for the Israeli Defense Forces is now on its way to Israel with more to follow over the coming days.”
  • The United Nations World Food Programme has called on the establishment of humanitarian corridors to deliver food supplies into Gaza following Israeli air strikes in response to Hamas’s attacks.
  • British prime minister Rishi Sunak told Netanyahu that Britain stands with Israel “unequivocally against these acts of terror,” adding that “no-one wants to see regional escalation.”
  • Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi said Iran supports the Palestinians’ right to self-defence and thatIran supports the legitimate defence of the Palestinian nation” and added “the Zionist regime and its supporters are responsible for endangering the security of nations in the region.”
  • Israel said 800 Hamas targets have been struck in Gaza since the Palestinian militant attacks erupted and hundreds of Hamas fighters have been killed, with dozens more captured.
  • The UN’s relief agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said thousands of people were sheltering in its 44 schools around Gaza and food distribution for more than 112,000 families had had to be put on hold.
  • Up to 100 Israeli hostages, including women and children, may have been taken into Gaza by Hamas, hugely complicating any Israeli military operation to free them. The US government is investigating reports of American hostages also being taken, as well as some other nationalities.
  • More than 1,000 dead. At this hour, the Israeli death toll after the surprise attack by the militant group Hamas on communities in the country’s south has risen to at least 600, including 44 soldiers. In Gaza, which was pummelled by Israeli airstrikes, officials reported at least 413 deaths.
  • The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said the country was at war and would exact a heavy price from its enemies. Hamas leaders said they were prepared for further escalation.
  • Israel military officials said “hundreds of terrorists” had been killed and dozens captured as the fighting broke out in the streets and continued on Sunday.
  • In northern Israel, a brief exchange of strikes between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group raised fears of a broader conflict.
  • In neighbouring Egypt, a police officer shot dead two Israeli tourists and an Egyptian at a tourist site in Alexandria.
  • The UN security council is expecting to meet at some point after the secretary general, António Guterres, urged “all diplomatic efforts to avoid a wider conflagration”.

"Tribe of Nova" Techno Festival

Israel music festival-goers fled in hail of bullets

__

For weeks, excited music-lovers had looked forward to the Tribe of Nova festival, held in the desert in southern Israel to coincide with the Jewish festival of Sukkot.

"The time has come when the whole family is about to get together again," organisers wrote on social media before it began. "And what fun it is going to be!"

Just hours later, their social media pages are now flooded with desperate people trying to find loved ones, after Palestinian militants stormed the festival and opened fire as part of huge surprise attack on Israel.

More than 250 bodies have reportedly been recovered from the festival site, according to rescue agency Zaka, quoted by Israeli media.

One partygoer, called Ortel, said the first sign that something was wrong was when a siren went off at around dawn, warning of rockets. Eyewitnesses said the rockets were quickly followed by gunshots.

"They turned off the electricity and suddenly out of nowhere they [militants] come inside with gunfire, opening fire in every direction. Fifty terrorists arrived in vans, dressed in military uniforms,"

People tried to flee the site, she said, running across the sand and getting into their cars to drive away - but partygoers said there were jeeps full of gunmen, shooting at the cars.

"They fired bursts, and we reached a point where everyone stopped their vehicles and started running. I went into a tree, a bush like this, and they just started spraying people. I saw masses of wounded people thrown around and I'm in a tree and trying to understand what's going on."

The festival site - with three stages, a camping area and bar and food area - was in the Negev desert, near Kibbutz Re-im. It is not far from the Gaza Strip, from where Hamas fighters crossed over at dawn to launch their attack. They infiltrated towns and villages, taking dozens of people hostage...

One of the famous people who died in that attack was the former Israeli soccer player "Lior Asulin" who was celebrating his 43rd birthday at the party.

US still seeking to determine Iran's connection to Israel attack

Israelis inspect the rubble of a building in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Sunday, October 8, a day after it was hit by a rocket fired from Gaza.

US officials told CNN on Sunday that the administration has yet to find a smoking gun so far linking Iran directly to planning and executing the attack on Israel this weekend.

However, there’s no denying Iran’s history of aiding Hamas, officials say.

“Of course Iran is in the picture,” one US official told CNN. “They’ve provided support for years to Hamas and Hezbollah.”

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, senior US officials have maintained that it was too early to determine whether Iran had any direct role in planning and supporting Hamas’ attack. “It is early" and a matter of direct interest to determine, one senior official said.

But officials are beginning to go as far as to say that Iran's well-established connections to Hamas would mean it is likely they helped train and finance effort that ultimately led to this weekend’s attack.

“Iran’s close ties to Hamas and financial and operational support make it likely they had a role in this,” one Democratic senator, who was expected to receive a classified briefing on Monday, told CNN.

But for now, US officials say there is no intelligence making the direct connection.

One congressional source said that given the sophistication of the attack, Iran would have had a role, since Hamas does not have the ability to buy weapons at this scale. The question now: To what extent Iran played a role.

Another key question is how Hamas coordinated and amassed the people and weaponry to execute the operation and do so undetected by key middle eastern and western intelligence operations, including the Israelis.

Israeli forces Conducting "wide-scale strikes" on Hamas Centers in Gaza

Smoke rises over buildings as the Israeli airstrikes continue in Gaza City, Gaza, on October 9.

Good evening.

After more than 48 hours of the type of intense, door-to-door fighting unseen in Israel for decades, the country's military has retaken control of all the communities around Gaza that gunmen from Hamas had infiltrated, the Israeli military said.

Israeli forces are currently conducting "wide-scale strikes" on several "strategic" centers in Gaza belonging to Hamas, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement Monday.

The Islamist militant group began its assault early Saturday morning, firing rockets into Israel and then sending gunmen over the border from Gaza. More than 700 people were killed, including foreign nationals and dual citizens from Brazil, France, Mexico, Nepal, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States. Many of those killed were young civilians who were attending an all-night rave. Israeli rescue workers said they found at least 260 bodies at the festival site.

Israel has intensified its bombardment of the Gaza Strip in retaliation to Hamas’s unprecedented cross-border incursion.

Clouds of smoke were seen rising over the Gaza skyline after overnight airstrikes and large parts of the territory were covered in debris.

A spokesperson for the health ministry in Gaza described an increasing number of casualties arriving at all hospitals, which has led to “significant overcrowding” and “congestion in the morgue refrigerators”.

Palestinians evacuated in an ambulance after Israeli strikes on a residential building in Gaza City on October 9.

My evening summary for Oct 9.
  • Israel’s death toll has risen to at least 800, with 2,616 injured, according to Israeli authorities.
  • The death toll in Gaza has risen to 560, with 2,900 injured, according to Palestinian authorities.
  • Gaza fired rockets toward southern and central Israel. There are injuries.
  • Israel continued carrying out airstrikes in Gaza.
  • Israeli authorities said they restored control in southern communities but that some Hamas militants might still be present inside Israel.
  • Israeli forces exchanged fire with armed individuals in northern Israel who crossed the border from Lebanon. Militants were killed, while Israeli soldiers were wounded.
  • Israeli combat helicopters carried out strikes inside Lebanon, and Israelis living near the Lebanese border were told to seek shelter until further notice.
  • The Associated Press reported that Egypt warned Israel “something big” is coming. The Israeli prime minister’s office denied a warning came from Cairo.

Pretty much sums sup what is about to happen.

Israeli soldiers carry the body of a victim of an attack at Kibbutz Kfar Aza, in southern Israel, on October 10.

Good afternoon.

It's the fourth day of fighting between Israel and Hamas. Here's is my summary for today:

It's the fourth day of fighting between Israel and Hamas since the Islamist militant group carried out one of the deadliest terror attacks in Israel's history, killing at least 900 people. Israel has responded with an overwhelming number of airstrikes on Gaza, the 140 square-mile densely populated territory controlled by Hamas, leaving at least 765 people dead, wounding 4,000 and displacing more than 137,000.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations told CNN that the country’s priority is "to obliterate Hamas terrorist capabilities. Overnight, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched another 200 strikes targeting "terror hubs." Hamas is threatening to kill civilian hostages and broadcast the executions live should the aerial attacks continue without warning. The group claims to be holding more than 100 captives, including Israeli army officers. Israel's UN ambassador said the number of hostages could be as high as 150.

Bloodbath at Be'eri: More than 100 bodies have been found in the Israeli kibbutz Be’eri, a self-sustaining farming community of 1,000 residents near Gaza. Be'eri was one of the first places targeted by militants who breached the border early Saturday morning, and among the hardest hit. Civilians there were killed and taken hostage, according to Israeli authorities and videos obtained and authenticated by CNN.
More foreign victims: More foreign nationals were reported dead on Tuesday, including citizens of France, Russia and Thailand.
Bodies of attackers: The IDF said it has recovered the bodies of about 1,500 Hamas militants since the group's surprise blitz early Saturday.
Control at the border: Hecht, the IDF spokesman, said Tuesday that the Israeli military had "more or less" restored full control over the border fence with Gaza following the breach over the weekend. Hecht said Israeli forces have secured communities around the border and have nearly completed evacuations in the area. He added that there were two small firefights overnight in a pair of communities. The focus is now on airstrikes and the forthcoming offensive in Gaza, Hecht said.
Fearing the worst: Some Israeli parents are being told to remove social media from their children's phones in case Hamas carries through with its threat to broadcast hostage videos.

Brutal CCTV camera footage shows Israeli being ambushed and murdered by Hamas terrorists at scene of Kibbutz Be'eri massacre; over 100 fatalities confirmed in area.

Some scenes from Gaza today.

Rumours are spreading online of videos showing Hamas beheading Israeli soldiers.

News reports also now suggest Hamas beheaded whole families including children.

Here is a censored video showing Hamas beheading Israeli man with a spade.
