German IDM-Superbike-Pilot "Leon Langstädtler" dies aged 24 in trainig accident

Tragic outcome in the final round of the German speed championship. The pilot of the Superbike category Leon Langstädtler died on Friday at the Hockenheim circuit after suffering an accident in the first moments of the second free practice. The 24-year-old German driver lost control of his BMW from the F73 Academy/Werk2 Racing Team BMW and crashed at the entrance of the Motodrom curve, staying in the middle of the track he was run over by another participant, Daniel Kirchhoff who could not avoid him.

After the serious accident, Race Direction raised a red flag and stopped the session. An ambulance and a helicopter arrived at the scene of the incident to attend to Langstädtler. on the track itself, but they could do nothing to save his life. The competition was suspended for the rest of the day on Friday, but it remains to be seen if they suspend the races on Saturday and Sunday.

The championship later issued a statement confirming the tragic news: “On Friday, September 23, 2022, a serious accident occurred at the Hockenheimring during the final of the International German Motorcycling Championship (IDM). In the second free practice session of the IDM Superbike, Leon Langstädtler fell and suffered serious injuries. Training was immediately stopped with the red flag. Langstädtler received immediate medical attention. Despite the intense efforts of the doctors, the 24-year-old natural Idstein succumbed to his injuries on the spot. All organizations involved in the race mourn the tragic accident and wish strength to family and friends in these difficult hours.”

Langstädtler, who in addition to being a pilot was a monitor at the F73 Academy, was 22nd in the overall championship standings.
