Good morning.

Austrian police are still searching for at least one suspect after a multiple gun attack overnight in the capital, Vienna, that killed four people.

Seventeen other people have been wounded - some seriously - after gunmen opened fire at six different locations in the city centre on Monday evening.
One attacker was shot dead by police, officials said, and one was arrested.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer described the assailant killed by police as an "Islamist terrorist".

Two of those who died in the random shooting were women and two were men. One of the women was reportedly a waitress. The second woman died of her wounds in hospital overnight, reports said.

The victims were in a city centre area busy with people in bars and restaurants, near Vienna's central synagogue, but it is not yet clear if that was the target.
Addressing a news conference, Mr Nehammer said the heavily armed gunman killed by police was an Islamic State (IS) sympathiser and that his home had been searched and video material seized. Police tweeted that he had been wearing a fake explosive belt.

Earlier, Mr Nehammer said at least one "heavily armed and dangerous" attacker was believed to be still at large. Officials were quoted as saying there could have been as many as four attackers. The interior minister urged people to avoid central Vienna and told parents to keep their children home on Tuesday if they could.

Sadly yes.

A while ago Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer gave a press conference and confirmed two men and two women have died from their injuries in the attack Monday evening. A suspected attacker, who was carrying an assault rifle and a fake suicide vest, was also shot and killed by police bringing total number of dead so far to five.

Vienna's hospital service said seven people were in life-threatening condition Tuesday after the attack.

In total, 17 people were being treated in hospitals, with gunshot wounds but also cuts.

Nehammer said that initial investigations indicate the suspect who was killed had sympathized with the Islamic State group. Police searched his apartment and other premises as well.

“We experienced an attack last night by at least one Islamist terrorist,” Nehammer told reporters. He declined to elaborate, citing the ongoing investigation.

The man blamed for carrying out the attack was a 20-year-old "Islamist terrorist" who was released early from jail in December 2019.

Authorities believe the gunman shot dead by police may have acted alone.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said the four who died were an elderly woman, an elderly man, a young male passer-by and a waitress. Another 22 people were wounded.
